The Role of Post-Production

The Role of Post-Production

When you hire an architecture and interior photographer to capture your project, it is important to understand the role of post-production in the image creation process. Post-production is the editing phase that takes place after the shoot, where the photographer uses software like Lightroom or Photoshop to improve image quality, correct flaws, and enhance the photographed building or interior.

Correcting Imperfections

Post-production is vital in architectural photography because it allows for the correction of flaws that are difficult to resolve during the actual shoot. A common example is perspective correction. When a photographer takes a picture of a building, there is often distortion due to the camera angle. By using retouching techniques, the photographer can straighten these lines to provide a more natural and balanced image.

The Professional Workflow

The time spent on each image can vary greatly depending on the complexity of the photo and the desired quality. A photographer might spend anywhere from 30 minutes to a full day on a single image to create a unique atmosphere that is consistent with the space. Common post-production techniques include masking, color and light correction, perspective straightening, and the removal of visual distractions.

It is important to note that every photographer has their own method and post-production style. Some use editing to create a dramatic or highly stylized effect, while others aim for a much more natural look. As a client, communicating with your photographer to understand their workflow is key.

Why I Avoid Unnatural HDR

A well-known process is HDR (High Dynamic Range), which blends multiple exposures. However, this can sometimes give a surreal or “plastic” effect to the image, which doesn’t always suit architecture and interior photography where a realistic rendering is preferred. This is why some photographers, myself included, choose to focus on more subtle, manual, and natural post-production methods.

In summary, photo post-production is a crucial step in obtaining high-quality images. It refines the photographs and makes them more attractive, allowing clients to truly value and market their construction and design projects.
